Way 3: Parables

Excerpt from “13 Ways to the Glory”

LUKE 9-14 can only be understood by examining the previous chapters, beginning with chapter 15. The Lord stood among a mixed multitude consisting of publicans, scribes, sinners, and Pharisees. Publicans were Jewish tax collectors employed by Rome. Deemed traitors for their allegiance to the Roman government, they frequently lined their pockets by exacting more than required from their brothers, only intensifying the hatred between the two. Sinners were those who had not received Christ. Pharisees were the religious echelon of the day and the staunch opponents of the Lord’s ministry. Scribes were those who copied sacred text.

The Pharisees and scribes murmured against the Lord as He ate with and ministered to the publicans and sinners. Whatever proceeds from the mouth reflects the condition of the heart. As they cast their judgmental gaze upon the scene, something quite disturbing happened. The ministry suddenly shifted. From chapters 16, 17 and 18, the Lord spoke to the crowd in parables. Parables are earthly stories with hidden, heavenly meanings that give instruction and direction. When His disciples asked why He spoke in parables the Lord answered:

Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, ‘By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.’ But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. (Matthew 13:13-16)

The Pharisees and scribes were doomed. Cut off from the Lord’s mercy, they would ever learn, but never come to the saving knowledge of the truth. How serious this is! By chapter 19 the Lord made Isaiah’s word as plain as day, yet their eyes remained blind and their ears full of wax.

The parable spoke of two men who came into the temple to pray. The Pharisee listed the sins of others while deeming himself better and ended his prayer with a judgmental finger pointed at the publican. Such prayer stemmed from a haughty, self-righteous heart. Like a helium balloon, his pride inflated even larger as he boasted of his life of fasting and giving before the Lord (v. 12).

Contrariwise, the publican, who did not so much as glance upward, confessed his condition before the Lord while pleading for mercy. This is brokenness. The Lord drew the conclusion. The publican received God’s acceptance and the Pharisee did not. The Lord ended by saying, “For every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted” (Luke 18:14).

Whenever you are abased and every effort of self-exaltation is pulverized to powder, give God praise for He is qualifying you for the greater glory. Each time you abase yourself, each time you take a lower seat at the table, the heavens applaud you because this is the way to endless elevation in the spirit of glory. Every time you take opposition in the correct vein—never wishing harm on your enemies, but rather praying for them that their eyes might be opened—you are on the right path. Every time you allow another to sing your praise, and not sing your own, then you are on target (Proverbs 27:2). When someone is dragging your name in the mud and you know enough about them to put them to open shame, but you say nothing about them, then you are walking the kingdom pathway to glory (I Peter 2:23)! And before you say, “I know someone just like that Pharisee,” first search your own heart and pray, “God, please deal with the Pharisee inside of me.”

Those who will carry the glorious presence of the Lord will be as the lowly tax collector, deeply aware of their need for His unspeakable grace and mercy regardless of their level of earthly success and personal strength.
